about

It started as an experiment with some old microphones and guitars. After a few conversations, it came to be a tribute to some of the best songwriters on the planet, most of whom you've maybe never heard.

These are porch songs in every sense. They are songs that have been played to me by my friends, by folks I have met out there on the road, by songwriters who are have such deep talent that I was shaken by their words and voices. The crime was that most people I know don't know who they are. In some ways, I have dedicated a lot of my life thus far to spreading the word about great music. I book shows for these people in my hometown of Iowa City and try to get as many ears in front of them as possible. I share the songs with folks who would dig them. I play them for people on my porch. They have been played to me on my porch, straight from the horse's mouth.

I finally decided I would love to record these songs, stripped down, where you can hear the words, soak in the melodies, and really get to the guts of the thing. I have many more I'd like to record and share with you, and that's why this is just Volume 1.

These are some of the best songs ever written in my book. If you dig them, please go check out the artists who wrote them. I guarantee they are much much better at singing them than I am. And they have dozens more amazing songs that need to be in your ears.

We recorded all of these songs in one sitting on August 1st, 2017 with the intention, sonically, to make it feel like you were sitting on my porch and I was just playing you some of my favorite songs. It is imperfect, it is flat, it is sharp, it is out of tempo, it is sloppy at times, but that's the way we thought it should be, because that's how I play on my porch at 2AM after playing a show and drinking a gallon of devil juice. I love it, I hope you do too.
